Why is it good to “brand” your blog?

by Derek on March 22, 2009

brandingDo you feel confused and frustrated when you cannot generate more visitors? Or when your visitors do not stay or subscribe? Readership and exposure are the two main elements of a successful blog; Branding is, thus, a very important part of having a blog.  Let’s see why you should brand your blog.

  1. Branding a blog makes clear for everyone what the topic is. Sometimes we tend to write different things in our blog, thus, the visitor who lands to our page doesn’t really know what it is all about. Some people will not spend enough time to find out themselves. You need to put in words what your blog is about and why it is important for them to keep reading.

  2. If you brand your blog correctly you give other people the chance to share it online – the viral effect is important! – and subscribe to it. You cannot expect people to talk about your blog or send the link of your blog if they don’t have a clear idea of what it is about. Readers tend to connect more with blogs they fully understand.

  3. If you brand your blog you make it more recognisable and distinctive. You might be writing about the same topic as many other bloggers, but if your content is unique and you brand it, you can set your blog apart from the rest. New readers and already existing ones can notice you better.

  4. Readers like to know about the blogger, because this makes them feel that the author is more approachable. Reveal a few things about you, either between the lines, or in the ‘About’ page.

  5.  If you brand your blog you can ensure a better ranking in Search Engines. All the major search engines tend to categorize the websites and blogs they crawl. They obviously do not expect you to do their job, but if you have branded your blog, you make it easier for them to choose the right category for you and present your blog in a more efficient way. It might be a small detail, but if it can help you rank better, you should go for it.

  6. Everyone else does it.  Doing what other people do is not always recommended, in some cases though it could be important to follow the general flow. It can prove helpful and it can determine, to some extent, the longevity and readability of your blog, so you shouldn’t underestimate it.

#6 is not a real reason though. As you said doing something simply because othe people do it is not always the best idea. Well it is in this case but you can’t tell anyone “do this because everyone else is doing it”.

Thanks for sharing this useful article. It is very simple to understand. Unique content helps a lot in making your blog better than others. People love to read something unique. You need to brand your blog if you want to achieve a higher position in search engines.
