Starting A Website – The Importance of Planning

by Derek on December 19, 2008

I’m sure you’ve heard this before: “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail“. Although it’s a cliché, it is still very relevant today. As with anything, a good online business venture needs a good plan. If you already have a business you should have already made a business plan and if you’re deciding on going into an internet business you should do a business plan.  Either way a web plan will help you focus on your goals for your site and give you a guideline of how to implement those goals.

The following is an outline of a simple online business plan. If you are planning on getting financial support for your site with a bank loan or investment you may want to use a more complex version, even spend the money to get a professional to help you out.

Outline of a web plan

1. Introduction and Description of your site - Give an overview of your site, what will it do?

2. Purpose of the site – What is the sites product or service, what purpose does it serve?

3. Your sites market – Who will your visitors be. What will they be looking for. What characteristics do they have.

4. Competition – Who will you be competing against, how will you deal with this.

5. Marketing – How will you promote your site

6. Development – How will you set up your site, who will take care of each step, who, if anyone will you hire, what support will you need?

7. Management – How will you manage your site, will you outsource?

8. Financial data – What will your expenses and estimated income be
