There are so many professions out there in the world, why choose to be a webmaster? With the internet, evolving and with so many companies trying to venture online, webmasters are highly soughted or will be in future. The reason why i chose to be a webmaster is because i think that’s the only thing that i am skilled in. I am not good in maths, not good in history, not good in languages, neither am i good with science but starting a website is the only thing that i feel i am good in, thus i decided on this profession 3 years back.
Competitors
With the internet and world wide web growing at such an immensive speed, many people are working towards “online”. There are hell lot of IT web professionals now as compared to in the past and this is no good, because it means more competition. So the only way to differentiate with others is the ability to upgrade yourself and be better. In this industry, there’s nothing such as the best or number 1. You could be the leading party at one time, but not forever.
What a webmaster must also know?
As defined, a webmaster is someone who manages or maintains a website, that includes updating content stuffs like that. However, in order to build up your value as a webmaster, there are certain things that you need to know too. Web programming and designing is what i feel a webmaster should also know. In many scenario, a web developer / designer is also considered to as a webmaster. Despite on just having technical skills, you also need to know web marketing such as promoting your website etc. Search engine optimization skills and link development skills are also a bonus.
Job scope V.S Salary
Getting monthly for just updating or maintaining website. Compared to the amount of effort put in, i think it’s far more than reasonable. Please note that this is just my perspective as a self employed webmaster. I do not have any working experience out there in the industry as a webmaster, so i don’t really know how much work a webmaster have to do in a company. So, if there’s any coporate webmasters out there, feel free to update us.

I enjoy working online but I will never do it as my profession (unless I start earning 10k a month from it) – I have a lot of other options which really helps I guess.
