How to optimize your blog

by Ali Hussain on September 5, 2008

If you would like to get more traffic for your blog, getting higher SERPs for your post titles, you have to optimize your blog. All this does not happen overnight or does not happen by magic. This blog get 70% of it’s traffic mainly from search engines and has been maintaining it’s ranking for couple of months. Below are the steps i take to optimize my blog for search engines.

Installing the plugins

After you installed wordpress, install the 2 plugins called google sitemap generator and all in one seo pack. Activate them from the plugin manager.

Configuring the plugins

Many people just download the plugin, activate and that’s it. That’s the wrong way! You have to make tweakings to it to maximise the potential of the plugins.

All in one seo pack

Take away all the blog titles and save it. Look at the below screenshot.

Google sitemap generator

Build your sitemaps and create a link to your sitemap at your theme footer. As for the priorities, i still have not figure out the actual way it works. Below is the priorities i used for this blog.

Configure your permalinks

This is a really important step. Change your default permalink to /%postname%/

Build quality backlinks to your blog

This step is a must. You need to build alot of one way backlinks to your blog. This will help to increase your SERPs in search engines. I know this is a tiring process but think of it like a long term investment. You could get manual submission services if you don’t want to do it personally and is as lazy as me.

Choosing/making the correct wordpress design

Beside all of off page factors in SEO, on page factors affects as well. This is where the web designers come about. Factors such as using h3 for post titles, using just one h1 tag in one page, alt tag for images etc. Check out domaintools.com, they have an seo browser.

Yeah, i hope this will be a useful post to all the new webmasters out there.

In addition to the SEO and Google Plug in, I also like the Dagon Sitemap generator.

3 Wordpress SEO Plugin September 13, 2008 at 2:30 am

WordPress is a great blogging platform and getting it search engine optimized really isn’t a hard task. Using proper permalinks and robots.txt file to prevent duplicate content and a few other methods can really make a difference. The All in One SEO plugin is really the best bet.
