The advice is good Derek, although there is one omission in my opinion.
You need to choose the RIGHT keyword to start with. With the wrong one, all your SEO, no matter how good, will have been in vain.

How can you ping your blog on search engines? I have got my new WordPress self hosted blog up 2 days ago and it’s pretty new. I know I have to make lots of backlinks for it to get it somewhere near but I will keep on adding stuff to it as well so I can get regular visitors on my blog.
I will also setup Google Sitemap soon. Thanks for these tips.
